Last night, Will's IV slipped out of his hand a bit. Before installing (that seems like the right word for some reason- it's quite a process) it in another limb, the RN checked with the doctor to see if we could try a round of feeding him and see how his glucose levels looked. The procedure since Wednesday am had been for his "sugar water" to be lowered by 1mL/hour if his glucose was above 60 before his next feeding. He had hit these benchmarks each time. The doctor agreed that this was the best course of action, so Will got to go tube-less for a nice 3 hour window. At midnight, before his feeding, we checked his glucose and it was in the 90's! He had. BM and ate like a champ. At 3am (yes, Mom, I was asleep) his glucose was in the 70's. His bili was 7 and light level was 13, which is great since Jaundice is more common in babies with low glucose. His glucose before his 6am feeding was 86. He is on schedule to go home this afternoon.
He loves his formula, but when he chooses to latch on, does a pretty solid job. We're hoping/planning on him being a flexible eater just like his sister and him chowing down on whatever he is given to eat.
He has a few more routine tests/shots/etc before he goes home, but they should get done today.
Remember Katie having similar glucose concerns at birth, but none of this nicu stuff? Well, you're right. They've changed the protocol since then because not all newborns rally to a normal level as quickly as our two have. We're thankful for the best possible care, the extra sleep, and a few less diapers to change.
